K+M is far superior, and I play almost every third person game with a controller. I played through the witcher 2 with a controller, but keyboard is so much better for this game. You can use mouse wheel to quickly switch through signs, where as on a controller you have to bring up a little menu which slows down the pace of a fight. Well for me at all and made the game too sloppy to play with the Controller I decided to mod up my own and its working great, feels a lot like playing The Witcher 2 with a 360 controller. This is my attempt to make the game play a bit more like The Witcher 2 with a controller.

Does The Witcher 1 have controller support for a 360 controller?
If the answer is no, is there a way to add it manually or make it work easily with say, Xpadder? I only ask cause I've had trouble getting 'complex' games (i.e. something more complicated than NES Mother/SNES EarthBound) to work comfortably using Xpadder. So maybe there is a patch or something for Xpadder for Witcher 1?? I'm not very PC techy, which is the reason I typically avoid PC games. Too many jumping through hoops just to get it to run without problems & my fingers can't work mouse & keyboard controls despite my efficiency with them to type. So I often won't even buy a game if it doesn't support controller.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You can make it work with Xpadder, but it's really awkward. I tried to do it and it was just a bear to control. The biggest obstacle is inventory, as there are no hot keys for 'take all' or anything. So loading into it means moving the mouse cursor with the right stick.. The small inventory icons make it hell to grab the right one with a joystick.
I tried it for about 10 minutes before I abandoned it back for the KB&M. The game definitely doesn't feel right with a controller. It is rather easy with a kb&m, though. It's real time with Pause so you can pause at any time during the action to decide your next move. Also works well with ots camera mode as a third person game. But remember that combat is a rhythm timing affair unlike The Witcher 2 or 3. I like the Witcher 1 the best personally despite the two sword trees you need to invest in to keep Geralt strong.
Overall, I'd say read a synopsis of the story up to the end of the Witcher 1 (including the books) with the Neutral or Order path (those would be Geralt's most likely chosen based on his character in the books) and start the Witcher 2, which is designed to work with a controller.

Control Map for version 1.1:

Different Sets (Main,Additional,UI) will have Different Keypresses and Functions available. Have a look at the screenshots for the control scheme. You
start in Main (which is mainly dedicated to Silver/Steel sword combat, switching styles etc) and can temporarily switch to the Additional set (dedicated to magic and the use of other weapons) as long as the LB is pressed. When LB is released, you switch back to Main. When RB is pressed you temporarily switch to a set dedicated to easier navigation of the UI. This set also has the DPad mapped between 1-4 for dialogue choices. As soon as RB is released, you go back to Main. Pressing RB+LB switches you to a fourth set that extends DPad from 5 to 8 but is otherwise the same as the 3rd. Needing to keep RB or LB pressed instead of using them as toggles for switching sets will avoid confusion as to what set you're in.

Additional for the dialogue prompts, the UI1 set has the DPad mapped from 1 to 4 (RB pressed) and UI2 has DPad mapped from 5-8(LB+RB).
-The A button is mapped to enter in order to dismiss/accept prompts and start(ESC) can be used to cancel.
-If you an extra Monitor, you can put the Xpadder Window on it to use it as a reference until you get used to the scheme.

- ***** VERY IMPORTANT ***** in Witcher, map the button P for walking AND remap the 'show names' button to: , (default is alt)
- Deadzone/Mouse sensitivity: these parameters are going to be different
for everybody, so you'll have to set them yourselves if mine don't work
for you. here's how to change them:
Deadzone: how far do you need to move the analog stick from dead-center before xpadder registers movement along the stick's axis. Will depend on your controller and it's condition (mine is at 8% right now but they're usually somewhere between 15-25% for regular Microsoft controllers). If you set the deadzone too low, the mouse will move by itself and WASD keyboard input will be sent while the sticks are at rest. You want to find the lowest deadzone you can get away with without getting ghost input because the higher the deadzone is, the less control you'll have.
How do you find Deadzone: XPadder will tell you when it's perceiving a signal by turning the buttons or sticks green. The deadzone you want is just above that point where the buttons around the stick are green while it's at rest. To change deadzone right click on stick in question and press settings. If you want to make WASD less reactive, you can higher the deadzone even more.
Mouse sensitivity: right click right thumbstick and choose mouse settings: increase or decrease emulation speed. Be sure to adjust deadzone and sensitivity for all sets.
