The series was directed by Tsutomu Mizushima, written by Reiko Yoshida and produced by Kiyoshi Sugiyama. Synopsis[edit]

Setting[edit]

The story takes place where historical World War II–era tanks are maintained for sport-style warfare competitions and large carrier ships known as Academy Ships support mobile sea communities. Of the many activities high school students can participate in, one of the most popular is 'sensha-dō' (戦車道, lit. 'the way of the tank'),[FN 1] the art of operating tanks, which is considered a traditional martial art.

Plot[edit]

Miho Nishizumi, a girl from a prestigious family of sensha-dō practitioners who became traumatized by a past event, transfers to Ooarai Girls High School to get away from sensha-dō, as she presumed the school was no longer practicing the sport. However, shortly after Miho begins her new school life and makes some new friends, the student council announces the revival of sensha-dō at Ooarai and coerces Miho, the only student with prior experience, to join. While reluctant to join at first, having practically been forced, Miho soon warms up to sensha-dō and they enter a national championship, facing off against various other schools, in a competition that becomes a serious matter after Miho and the others learn that their school will be closed should they not win.[4][11]

The spin-off manga, Girls und Panzer: Little Army, follows Miho in her elementary school days as she participates in sensha-dō alongside her friends Emi, Hitomi, and Chihiro.

Anime[edit]

The anime series produced by Actas began airing in Japan on October 9, 2012 and was simulcast by Crunchyroll.[17] It was directed by Tsutomu Mizushima and written by Reiko Yoshida, with original character designs by Humikane Shimada. Due to production delays,[18] the final two episodes were postponed to a March 2013 airing, with recap episodes taking their place.[19][20][21]Original video animation episodes are included with the Blu-ray Disc/DVD releases, which were released between December 21, 2012 and June 21, 2013.[22] The opening theme is 'DreamRiser' by ChouCho whilst the ending theme is 'Enter Enter MISSION!' performed by Mai Fuchigami, Ai Kayano, Mami Ozaki, Ikumi Nakagami and Yuka Iguchi.[23] The series has been licensed in North America by Sentai Filmworks who released the series on December 3, 2013,[24] and the OVAs on February 25, 2014.[25][26] A scene in episode eight, which featured the song 'Katyusha', was absent in the Crunchyroll simulcast and was replaced with an instrumental version of 'Korobeiniki' in the Sentai Filmworks release due to licensing issues.[27] Five character song single CDs have also been released, along with the original soundtrack of the anime. Five drama CDs, a fan disc CD, and BD/DVD called Girls und Panzer: Heartful Tank Disc were also released after the anime aired. An OVA episode featuring the battle against Anzio was released on July 5, 2014, in 12 theaters across Japan,[28][29] and was released in Blu-ray Disc/DVD on July 25, 2014.

Video games[edit]

A video game based on the series, titled Girls und Panzer: Senshadō, Kiwamemasu! (ガールズ&パンツァー 戦車道、極めます!), was developed by Namco Bandai Games and released for the PlayStation Vita in Japan on June 26, 2014.[39] The game is a third-person tank shooter, which features a game mechanic where the player is able to switch between different tanks on the battlefield in real-time, in order to control multiple tanks on the same team.[40] The player is able to control the tank via both third-person and scoped views during combat.[41] The game features a story mode, in addition to a 'Battle Royale' mode where the player can form teams as they desire.[42]

Another video game based on the series and film, titled Girls und Panzer: Dream Tank Match (ガールズ&パンツァー ドリームタンクマッチ), was developed by Namco Bandai Entertainment for the PlayStation 4. It was released on February 22, 2018 in Japan and on February 27, 2018 in Southeast Asia with English text.[43][44] An enhanced version of the game titled Girls und Panzer: Dream Tank Match DX (ガールズ&パンツァー ドリームタンクマッチDX) was released for the Nintendo Switch in Japan on February 21, 2019.[45] This new version includes content from part one of Das Finale;[46] the new content was also made available for the PS4 version as paid DLC.[47]

Mobile game[edit]

A mobile game based on the series, titled Girls und Panzer: Senshadō Daisakusen! (ガールズ&パンツァー 戦車道大作戦!), was developed by Showgate for the Android and IOS phones that was launched in Japan on November 11, 2015. It is a hexagonal strategy-based game that includes a gacha system.

Collaboration projects[edit]

A collaborative project between the Girls und Panzer animation team and Belarusian computer game developer Wargaming was unveiled in 2013, aiming to promote the online multiplayer video game World of Tanks in Japan.[48][49][50] Part of the collaboration involved the promotion of the game in Japan in the form of advertising and local events, as Wargaming focused to penetrate the Japanese market.

The South-East Asian game server for World of Tanks featured a tutorial documentation in the form of manga, titled Hajimete no Senshado - WoT for Beginners (はじめての戦車道~ WoT for Beginners). Drawn by Midori Hagi,[51] it features Girls und Panzer characters as they learned how to play the game.[52] The manga game tutorial is available in English, Thai, Traditional Chinese,[53] and Japanese; it depicts the five members of Ōarai Girls High's Anglerfish sensha-dō team as they learn how to play World of Tanks, intending to explain the game's basics to new players in an entertaining and interesting manner. The tutorial manga also had a side effect of introducing Girls und Panzer to many World of Tanks players, increasing its popularity amongst the players in the Asian region.

Girls und Panzer-themed mods for the game were announced at the 2013 Tokyo Game Show; these game mods were distributed as free downloads for players in the South-East Asian server, mainly targeting the Japanese-speaking community.[54] Initially, there were six voice packs released, featuring the voices of all five members of the Anglerfish team, as well as a special voice pack for Nonna, the vice captain of Pravda's sensha-dō team; each of the five crew members of the Anglerfish team voices the five different crew positions in World of Tanks: Commander, Gunner, Loader, Radio Operator, and Driver. The voice packs replaces the standard crew voices with the Girls und Panzer character voices, when tank commands such as 'Target acquired!' or 'Reloading!' sound in the game. The voice packs, however, are only available in Japanese. Afterwards, a garage mod was released, where players could change the regular game garage to the sensha-dō garage square in Ōarai Girls High's Academy Ship. Another mod that was released allowed players to change the skins of a few select tanks in the game to the paint jobs of the tanks in the Girls und Panzer anime. Tanks include the Panzer IV H of Ōarai Girls High, the Churchill VII of St. Gloriana Girls Academy and the Jagdtiger of Kuromorimine Girls High. The last mod that was made available changed the look of destroyed tanks for certain vehicles; instead of a smoking wreck of metal that is shown when a tank is destroyed, the tank is shown in a moderate condition, with a white flag on top, similar to when tanks are knocked out in Girls und Panzer, to indicate that the tank is destroyed.[55]

These mods were later made available together in a mod pack that is free to download on the South-East Asian server of World of Tanks.[56] On 31 January 2016, the World of Tanks South-East Asian server released an updated version of the Girls und Panzer-themed mod pack, in celebration of the release of Girls und Panzer der Film. It features the voices of the Anglerfish sensha-dō team and replaces the standard game garage with the Ōarai Girls High School Tank Garage. It also features a lot of new tank skins, such as the Panzer IV D of Ōarai Girls High, before it was converted into the Ausführung H model, and the T95, M24 Chaffee, and the M26 Pershing of the university's sensha-dō team, in addition to all the previous ones released in earlier mods.[57]

Reception[edit]

The initial television airing of the first 10 episodes within 2012 received favourable television ratings and strong viewership.[58] The relatively early airing timeslot of the show allowed the series to gain better exposure to more viewers. Blu-ray sales of the first anime volume in Japan reached third place on the Oricon charts in mid-February 2013,[59] whilst sales of the second anime volume Blu-ray reached second place in late February with 24,733 copies sold within the first week of release.[60] The third Blu-ray volume met with similar success during March, with 23,528 copies sold within the first week, peaking at third place behind Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn and Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha the Movie 2nd A's.[61] The first week sales of the 4th Blu-ray volume reached second place at 28,410 units, behind Evangelion: 3.33 You Can (Not) Redo, which had its debut Blu-ray release the same week.[62] The first week sales of both the 5th and 6th Blu-ray volumes placed first in the weekly Oricon chart, having reached 33,450 units[63] and 32,385 units[64] respectively. The first week sales of the Girls und Panzer: This is the Real Anzio Battle! OVA Blu-ray placed third in the weekly Oricon chart, having reached 35,909 units.[65]

Plastic models of tanks based on those within the anime have topped sales charts in Japan.[66]

In celebration of the popularity of the anime series and to promote local tourism, on 24 March 2013 the town of Ōarai in Ibaraki Prefecture held an event themed along the Girls und Panzer anime, as part of its yearly spring festival. Deool band full movie download 720p. The event featured live tank demonstrations and the sale of anime-themed merchandise.[67][68]

An opinion piece published on 22 January 2013 in the China National Defense Newspaper [zh], a subsidiary of the state-owned People's Liberation Army Daily, criticized the anime for promoting 'militarist sentiments behind the guise of cute characters.' [69]

Famitsu gave the video game adaptation Girls und Panzer: Senshadō, Kiwamemasu! a review score of 23/40.[70]PlayStation LifeStyle gave the game 8/10, highly praising the tank battles for their simplicity and the story for its charm.[71] The game sold 31,526 physical retail copies within the first week of release in Japan.[72]

Footnotes[edit]

  1. ^The translation of 'sensha-dō' differs depending on the source. Official print media published in Japan uses the German compound word 'Panzerfahren',[10] whilst the official English dub by Sentai Filmworks uses the term 'tankery'.

This movie's tank battle is a fight for honor.
Momo is the center of this story. No save the school this time.
First off from the start of a new opening sequence it's quite clear that this 6 part movie is meant to be the new 12 episode second season. With a new season comes with new characters and new tanks and new tounament, but let's save that for later. That being said the movie indeed felt like a two parter episode. The production values are not as grand as 'Der Film' but it's still very good. Besides the somewhat noticeable 3D Miho in the opening prologue the CGI used in the film is still quite impressive, especially showing the vast pastoral landscape of quasi-French rural area.
The movie is truly enjoyable. Every minute is so fun to watch that time passes very quickly. The movie is much better than the battle with Anzio. We can see that Marie is a more crafty person than what the previews would led us to believe and BC team are a much more formidable team.
It's a sheer enjoyment to watch. Everything clicks with the pacing, the funny rapporteur with the characters, the ever expansive world building and the great setup of things to come. But, then it became a big disappointment. I'll state why on the spoilers in the Forum, but I was disappointed at the end and it's got nothing to do with the quality of the film. No, the film is stellar. The makers haven't lost their touch in delivering a great story nor did they lost their creative juices in this. The characters are quite refreshing to see again, along with their usual antics. The film is pack with gimmicks, tricks and homages to other films but one doesn't get to feeling that it's forced or contrived. Yukari's clandestine filming of the rival BC team is hilarious. The new characters are a good addition to the cast, as well as a good foil to the bubbly cuties of the Rabbit team. The ED sequence 'Enter enter mission!' is even sung with a naval tune to go with the new characters personas.
Yes, I was disappointed with the movie for different reasons but I also enjoyed it so much that I watched it thrice. Maybe it's my GuP fan partiality, but I really really really.. can't wait for movie 2.
----------------------------
4/14/18 update:
Since, the BD/Dvd is out for while now I can finally say why I'm disappointed in the film, it's because of the Cliffhanger at the end.
When I came out of the theater I can see in everyone's silent faces what they're thinking when the sad reality dawn on them 'That is such a good and enjoyable movie!!! but damn, it'll be probably be months or even a year we get to see how they beat BC Freedom in part 2.'
Sadly, still no word on Movie 2.:(

Re-posted review with minor edits since we seem to be treating each episode as its own show a la YuYuYu prequel's initial release.
It's been said before: 'Great shows leave you wanting more, terrible shows leave you demanding a refund for the time it wasted.' Dammit, I want more. I should've heeded advice I heard long ago: 'Don't watch an OVA until all the episodes are out.'
For those of you unfamiliar with Girls und Panzer (GuP), a few things to keep in mind:
- The entire show is like a long sketch comedy skit, and the first episode of this finale series is no different.
- If you want to enjoy the show, don't take anything but the friendships seriously. There's nothing realistic about the tanks, and the cultural references are mostly jokes.
- Seriously, watch the whole series, movie, and bonus OVA. If you love a good laugh, you'll love this franchise.
This series is something of a cult hit/classic, even though series 1 hit a production snag that caused it to take a month or so of hiatus. I wasn't bothered by that, because I only started watching a few years after it aired. Holy cow, this anime is hilarious.
So naturally fans wanted more. A movie and OVA were announced during a live show, and there was much rejoicing (yay). But even after an absurdly ridiculous and over-the-top movie, fans still wanted more. OK, said the production staff, we'll do more. But this is the last time! Kinda like Strike Witches but with skirts.
Episode 1 feels like a movie all on its own (in fact it feels like the recent Nanoha movie), the action and story feel 'meaty' for lack of a better term, the new tank and team had me in stitches (especially when the show poked fun at Army vs Navy rivalry-- and I was sure they would go for the TOG II, but this new tank will do just as well, since it was designed for a similar role), and the new rival team is also hilarious. Watching a blonde aristocrat munching cake with glee is one of my favorite scenes in the show.
The soundtrack for the OVA is expanded even further from the movie, and I love the new tracks that make use of the horns and drums; one of them is kind of like a team of ballerinas doing a quick march in army boots. The Shark Team is the only team to get a theme song/tune (sung by Madoka Yonezawa, who has a great singing voice), and the orchestral version soars while they save the day. Give the composer a raise. The OP is fantastic, especially with that animation. Wow. You wouldn't think the gal who sang the Anglerfish Dance would come up with that, but she's got skills. And an orchestral Enter Enter Mission? .. OK, I could dig that.
Finally, since the new team is French themed, there's no better army song than La Chanson de L'Oignon, or 'The Song of the Onion.' Yes, really. One of the most beloved marches in the French military is a song about onions fried in oil, and how they're going to keep the Austrian dogs from having some (must be a Marie Antoinette reference). Yes, really, I kid you not. The girls are driving tanks while (obliquely) singing about onion rings.
If that doesn't make you laugh, I'm sure there's a highly artistic French film out there you'll enjoy.

GaruPan. is. Back.
This is quite obviously a 6 part OVA series. Think, Garden of Sinners movie 1 or Gundam Unicorn OVA 1. Much like those two, das finale OVA1 has plenty of hype scenes and a small conflict that is resolved. However much of the runtime is used to setup the tournament that is to unfold in the coming episodes as well as introduce some cool new characters both for Ooatari Joshi and the opponent of the day: UC Academy. UC Academy is a French school and their entire gimmick is a split down the middle modeling the French Revolution.
Now plenty of people are probably excited for the visuals and audio quality, as GaruPan has pushed those barriers strongly with der Film. And what can I say, it isn't even close: das Finale has raised the bar again and it is so much better than both the TV ver and der Film. The audio is actually modeled in surround as well so it may be awkward for headphone users. I highly recommend a good home theater setup to get the greatest enjoyment.
And well, that's all that there is to say since talking about the plot of a sub hour OVA really isn't useful. Just go watch it! Issa good.

Girls & Panzer: Saishuushou a new chapter in the series. My expectations continue very high. However, there is a part of the story that feels forced; they aren't going to compete for the school, they are going to do it for Momo. Maybe it is a bit weird seeing her as the center of the story, but the main idea of the series remains.
The first episode is more like an introduction in combination with an update of the series. Maybe the pacing is a bit slow. However, there are very remarkable parts that some spectators will like. I don't know if the other episodes will be short, but I am awaiting them to be a bit longer.
Technically the series continues giving us an excellent quality with great art and a right combination of sound mix and music.
